The first step to becoming a Castle Connolly Top Doctor is to be nominated. Every year, Castle Connolly surveys tens of thousands of practicing physicians across the U.S. After a doctor is nominated, Castle Connolly’s physician-led research team screens each doctor to confirm whether they meet Castle Connolly standards.
What Criteria Is Used in the Selection Process?
When selecting Top Doctors, Castle Connolly evaluates several criteria including professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation, and disciplinary history.
Not Just Medical Skills, but People Skills as Well
Castle Connolly also asks doctors in the survey to consider not only the medical training and clinical skills of the physicians they nominate, but also interpersonal skills. Top Docs exhibit skills like listening and communicating effectively, showing empathy, and instilling trust and confidence in their patients.
Peer Reviews Vs. Patient Reviews
No one can pay to be a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, each physician has been hand selected. Final selection is determined through peer review by physicians in each specialty. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Medical Research found that across several specialties Castle Connolly’s peer-reviewed directory was much more reliable than sites that relied only on patient reviews when it came to identifying quality care. There are over 850,000 practicing doctors in the United States and not all qualify to be a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Unlike other ‘find a doctor’ services, Castle Connolly has curated approximately 64,000 board-certified US physicians. Through their rigorous research process, only these hand-selected few have been awarded Top Doctor status.
