KCUC Firsts – First to Bring Cutting-Edge Care to KC

Treatments

At KCUC Urology and Oncology, we are proud to bring Kansas City the very best urology and oncology care. Doing that requires that we stay on top of the latest developments in treatments and technology. That is exactly what we have been doing since our inception. You can rest assured that our doctors are on the cutting edge of medicine and we will bring you the most state-of-the-art care possible. Through the years, we have been the first to bring cutting-edge care to KC. Here are just a few:

KCUC First in KC to Bring RapidArc Radiotherapy

Kansas City Urology and Oncology’s radiation treatment center is proud to be Kansas City’s first provider of RapidArc radiotherapy. RapidArc radiotherapy is a breakthrough technology that delivers faster and more precise cancer treatments. Using a machine called a medical linear accelerator RapidArc generates high-powered X-rays through beams from many angles. This new approach to delivering image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) is more precise and safer for the patient. Image guidance improves tumor targeting, and IMRT shapes the radiation dose so that it conforms closely to the shape of the tumor ensuring that more radiation is delivered to the tumor and less to surrounding healthy tissues. An on-board CT imaging system provides high-resolution images of the targeted area just before each daily treatment and allows the treatment team to position a patient for treatment with an accuracy of less than a millimeter. KCUC is the only office-based provider of RapidArc radiation therapy.

KCUC First to Bring PROVENGE Therapy to KC

Kansas City Urology and Oncology is now an exclusive provider of PROVENGE in the Kansas City metro area. PROVENGE is the first approved immunotherapy for advanced prostate cancer. PROVENGE takes cells from the patient, activates them, and returns them to the patient’s body thus boosting the immune system to target and attack cancer cells and keep them from spreading. This immunotherapy allows the immune system to fight the cancer immediately helping men with prostate cancer live longer.

KCUC First to Use daVinci Robotic System

The da Vinci robotic system is an advanced form of laparoscopic (small incision) surgery where surgeons use a computer-controlled robot to assist them. With urologic surgeries, being able to make a smaller incision and get the job done with less disruption to the body is a big deal to our patients. The daVinci single-port offers major advantages for surgeons including a better view of the surgery site, increased dexterity, and enhanced precision. This translates to reduced pain, swelling, and recovery time for the patient. The original da Vinci robot used multiple ports requiring multiple incisions, but the da Vinci Single Port provides 360° of access with three instruments through a single port. In 2019, KCUC surgeons pioneered the first daVinci Single Port system in Kansas City after pioneering the first multi-port daVinci robot beginning in 2003.

KCUC First Practice in KC to Offer REZUM for Enlarged Prostate

FDA cleared in 2015, Rezum is a minimally invasive procedure, which uses hot steam to reduce the enlarged part of the prostate responsible for urinary obstruction. Rezūm is an outpatient procedure that takes just a few minutes. This therapy treats the cause, not just the symptoms and it minimizes the negative effect on surrounding tissue so it preserves sexual and urinary functions and patients can quickly resume normal activities.

KCUC Surgeon First to Implant the InterStim-X System

Dr. Sam Kuykendall, a urologist at KCUC Urology and Oncology, is the first physician to implant Medtronic’s new InterStim X™ system in the state of Missouri. The InterStim X™ system is an SNM (sacral neuromodulation) system used to help control nerves that affect bowel and bladder control.

KCUC Surgeon First to Use the UroLift UL2 System

With the Urolift procedure, permanent implants are used to hold the prostate tissue away from the urethra allowing the urine to pass through freely. The Urolift procedure requires no cutting, heating, tissue destruction, or tissue removal. The latest advancement in Urolift treatment is the introduction of the new UL2 delivery handle. Each Urolift implant is delivered through a cartridge. This new handle streamlines the procedure by enhancing the way the implant is deployed. First UroLift UL2 Implant for enlarged prostate

KCPI – First to Bring Outpatient Proton Therapy to KC

Kansas City Proton Institute (KCPI), a division of KCUC, is the first to bring outpatient proton therapy to Kansas City. In fact, KCPI is the first office-based proton therapy center in Kansas and Missouri. Having an office-based proton therapy center will make cutting-edge cancer care more accessible and convenient for thousands of cancer patients in both states. Additionally, it will reduce costs for cancer patients.
